Congratulations! You’ve decided to study at FIAFitnation Brisbane, but where can a you grab a decent cup of coffee? Or a cheap and cheerful brekky?
We’re firm believers in a balance between work and play, so, we’d like to show you the best of both worlds in Brisbane. Graham Fletcher, a Senior Trainer and Assessor from the Brisbane campus, is here to take you on a tour of his favourite health spots around the city.
Thanks to the great weather up here in Queensland, there has been a big growth in the outdoor exercise field. The Brisbane City Council has been proactive with this, and as a result, new (and free) activities are constantly popping up around the city! Pilates or yoga in the park, anyone?
If you like exercising outside out in the open air, the South Bank parkruns are for you! Every Saturday at 7am, you can join a 5km timed run at South Bank Parklands, which includes an instructor-guided warm up and cool down. This weekly event is a great way to meet people, join a community, and stay fit.
For indoor classes, we love 2ballerinas dance school on Brisbane’s northside. 2ballerinas is an adult dance school which offers ballet lessons and classes for people of all levels, from beginner through to experienced dancers. They have created a relaxed, fun, and welcoming environment for people of all ages (the oldest student there is 85, how awesome is that!).
Health food stores
Graham’s favourite health food spot at the moment is The Stores Grocer in West End. “I am a big fan of deli-style and market set ups, where you have access to a great variety of products and can buy in desired quantities,” says Graham. Something that sets The Stores Grocer apart from large supermarket chains is that they steer clear of pre-packaged produce, and anywhere that has over ten varieties of olives gets his thumbs up.
If you’re wandering around the Northside, Graham encourages you to stop off at Market Organics (you won’t regret it). Market Organics is a family-owned organic and sustainable wholefoods store. They stock a wide variety of both products and produce, as well as housing a dine-in cafe, so that you’re never caught shopping on an empty (and impulsive) stomach.
Healthy breakfast spots
When it comes to café culture, Brisbane is spoiled for choice! On the Northside, some of Graham’s go-to spots are Kafe Krave in Windsor and Q Roasters in Stafford – “you can grab a bite to eat and then grab a coffee to go.”
If you’re looking for a pitstop near our campus in Fortitude Valley, you can’t beat Bear Bones Coffee for a simple yet tasty brekky and a warm cup of joe. They source their own coffee beans and craft them into specialty blends and single origins aka they have really great coffee!
The Brisbane River gets the top score for hangout spots around the city. You can stroll down a walking path or take your bike for a spin on the cycle track, which stretch down both sides of the river. From South Bank, you can make your way up and down the river, pass Kangaroo Cliffs, and enjoy some of the best views of the city (early morning and dusk are the prime times).
When you feel like a break from the big city, a bush walk through Mt Coot-Tha is a breath of fresh air (literally). Only a 20 minute drive from the city, Mt Coot-Tha has a lot to offer with mountain bike tracks, walking trails, open forest areas, a reserve, and horse riding trails.
“I’m lucky enough to live a two minute walk from the bush on the the northside of Brisbane, so I have plenty of outdoor options right on my doorstep. One of my favourite pass times is heading out for a trail run in the Samford Conservation Forest or mountain biking on the Jinker track mountain bike trail at Bunyaville Conservation Park,” says Graham.
You will never be bored when you’re in Brisbane! Thanks to our beautiful weather, there are great events on all throughout the year, and there’s something for everyone.
There is a bounty of running, trail running, swimming, road cycling, and mountain biking events to keep you active. A few years ago, Graham embarked on the Brisbane to the Gold Coast cycle challenge with around 5000 other cyclists. “I highly recommend this event if you like a challenge and want to train for something throughout the year, and you set your own pace whether you want to cruise or pump your peddles for the 100km journey.”
A similar cycling event is the Mt Coot-tha challenge. For this one, you can choose the distance that you want to ride and whether you want to push yourself and climb up the Mt Coot-tha slope for 3kms at a 9% incline. Take this challenge if you’re looking for a burn in your legs!
Senior Trainer & Assessor
Graham originally comes from a Dance background where he was a Professional Ballet dancer for 13 years. He started with the Queensland Ballet and then spend the majority of his dance career working in Overseas companies. On retiring as a dancer Graham made the transition into the Fitness industry.
For the last 17 years he has run his own PT business and worked in additional roles as PT manager for 6 years and Les Mills Presenter for Body Balance. His interest in Fitness is broad and inclusive with particular interest in CrossFit, Corrective Exercise and everything in between.
