LinkedIn is the perfect springboard to create your online profile, network with other wellness professionals and build your database of dream clients.
Opening a LinkedIn account is not to be done lightly, however. First impressions are important and you want to be giving out the right messages straight off the bat. Here are our top five tips for getting your profile up and running:
1. Take a moment to plan
Consider your objectives for creating a LinkedIn profile. Resist the temptation to add all your friends as you would on Facebook and instead connect with those who align to your specialty.
2. Start from the top
Your next step is to choose a profile picture that sends out the right message. Upload a clear head shot taken with a professional camera and wear clothing that reflect your brand – we’re big fans of our FIAFitnation alumni looking fit in their active wear.

3. The pitch
The 'Summary' is the extension of your headline and is essentially your personal sales pitch. It should tell your 'story', and highlight what you offer to potential employers.
Our tip would be including keywords to raise your profile ranking in a LinkedIn search. If you’re stuck, browse job listings or profiles of people in your target industry (from point 1) for a better idea of the kind of language you could use.
4. Leverage your experience
List your relevant experience, whether it’s full or part time, work experience or internships. If you’re just starting out and have limited experience, draw on the transferrable skills which you can apply to your current job i.e. teamwork, taking ownership and communication skills.
The 'Volunteering Experience' segment is also important, and many recruiters take this into consideration.
Keep it concise: a few carefully chosen words and some clear formatting will help viewers to hone in on your key achievements and responsibilities.
5. Show us what you’ve got
A great function of LinkedIn is that it allows you to provide examples of your portfolio and projects you've worked on. You can upload articles, videos or photos using the 'Add Media' function, or include links to websites or blogs. Again, this doesn't need to be paid work: college work or personal projects are just as valid.
Insider tip: keep an eye on the 'Profile Strength' graphic at the top-right of the screen to see how far your profile is from completion.
Remember that you can keep your profile private until you are ready in 'Manage public profile settings'.
