Cereal Killers

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Not only because it provides fuel and essential nutrients for the day ahead, but shockingly because it’s a leading factor in childhood obesity.

The report card is in. The results are not good.

So how do you find a healthy cereal?  We asked our nutrition lecturer Sophie for her top tips:

1st look at the label…. no more than 5g sugars (total) per 100g.

Fibre > 6g per 100g
Sugar < 5g per 100g
Salt < 120mg/100g

2nd ignore the health claims – they are often misleading and manufacturers can be tricky by reducing the serving size to make products seem healthier.shutterstock_57435133

There are many other breakfast options available other than cereals.  We’re fans of:

  • Eggs
  • Smoothies
  • Unsweetened yoghurt and fruit
  • Wholegrain toast low-sugar spreads
