Cereal Killers

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Not only because it provides fuel and essential nutrients for the day ahead, but shockingly because it’s a leading factor in childhood obesity.

The report card is in. The results are not good.  

So how do you find a healthy cereal?  We asked our nutrition lecturer Sophie for her top tips:

1st look at the label…. no more than 5g sugars (total) per 100g.

Fibre > 6g per 100g
Sugar < 5g per 100g
Salt < 120mg/100g

2nd ignore the health claims – they are often misleading and manufacturers can be tricky by reducing the serving size to make products seem healthier.

There are many other breakfast options available other than cereals.  We’re fans of:

  • Eggs
  • Smoothies
  • Unsweetened yoghurt and fruit
  • Wholegrain toast low-sugar spreads
